Microlearning and gamification can be combined with great results. In this blog, I will share few cases where we combined microlearning and gamification using the right strategy to create better learning experiences. Overview In my previous article on microlearning, Creating an Effective Learning Experience Through Microlearning Strategy I had noted, “Microlearning has emerged as an important way to improve learners’ recall and understanding of crucial concepts and use them as learning aids during the moment-of-need”. Microlearning strategy is extremely effective to teach …

Micro-learning is so hot right now. But I'm not going to deliberate over its definition. If you're into that, check out Shannon Tipton's Microlearning: The Misunderstood Buzzword and 7 Deadly Myths of Microlearning. Nor am I going to try to convince you to jump on board, or abandon ship. Instead, I'm going to consider firstly…

Despite its ubiquity and undeniable usefulness as a tool in the eLearning repertoire, microlearning defies easy definition. It fills a multitude of roles and is called on in a huge range of situations, both at work and in learners’ personal and consumer lives. But despite the abundance of both actual microlearning and discussion about microlearning, the question remains: Is microlearning really learning? The answer is, “It depends.”

I was recently telling a friend about an eLearning course I designed years ago. Due to an odd and unexpected circumstance, about six months after it was launched I had to take it as a learner. Instructionally it was pretty well designed...the content was well-organized and structured, the course was interactive, the graphics were good, the programming was flawless.

Why does good microlearning work? Why does any eLearning succeed or fail? The science of microlearning—much like the science of learning—consists of several principles. These principles examine how we process and remember information, whether and for how long we can retain and recall it, and what influences whether we are able to pull it out of our memories and apply it in a relevant situation.

A microlearning approach can be really successful in helping your learners meet learning objectives. Three important considerations for creating microlearning are:
1. Making it a part of a larger learning strategy
2. Getting learning into just-in-time resources, and
3. How it can facilitate spaced practice
And of course, you need the right tools to actually create the content that supports these considerations. I think that PowerPoint could well be the only tool you need. No, wait, really!

Think about the last time you invested time in learning something through online training. Perhaps your mind has gone back to a course you’ve taken? If so, I think you may be wrong. I’d wager that the last time you engaged with eLearning is by Googling something. Perhaps just in the last hour. Maybe you looked up the definition to a word or the population of a country. You might have looked for product information.

One of the biggest challenges we face in eLearning is how we manage, maintain, update, and enhance content based on the needs of our audience. If we think of a typical course, it is often made up of a series of topics within a module. In the past, the majority of our content was delivered in courses. One of the hurdles with courses is that the content within is not searchable; in addition, learners are unable to link to the content directly. As a result, learners use their favorite search engine to find content externally.
